This is our preferred method of rooting after years of trial and error but is by no means the only way of doing it.
When you receive your cuttings they will be wrapped on the bottom end with a damp paper towel as well as a plastic bag.
Remove your cuttings from the wrap and place them into a glass of water about 1/2 to 1 inch deep.
I recommend putting one cutting per cup so that if one does starts to rot in the water you won't lose multiple cuttings.
Add a few drops of peroxide to the water to help control algae and molds, use sparingly as too much will inhibit root formation.
I find light is not too important for rooting and usually take over the dining room table, a window ledge or any other available space.
Within a few days to a week you will see little white bumps forming on the stem, these are the beginnings of root formation.
Roots will normally form within one to two weeks but if they take a bit longer don't panic they will come.
Once the roots are about 1/2 inch long it's time to plant them up.
At times we send out cuttings with roots already forming, these can skip the water stage and go directly into soil. Don't be concerned if a few roots are broken in transit, they will regrow quickly.
I like to use a 4 inch pot but others use clear solo cups so they can watch the root growth.
Don't cheap out on your soil at this point or you may lose them, I prefer to use Sunshine mix, Pro mix or something similar. Bargain brand soils tend to hold too much water and have little airspace causing the stem to rot.
Once the plants are fully rooted filling the pot they can be moved up to a larger pot, many people like to move up a pot size at a time, I do ours in May and put them directly into a 5 or 10 gallon pot.
They can be moved outside once the danger of frost has passed in your area.
Note that some varieties are stubborn and difficult to root, I've been doing my best to keep these ones off of our cutting offers and will only offer them as rooted cuttings or starter plants.
Although we always want you to have success in rooting these wonderful plants, on occasion we will have one that will refuse to root no matter what we do.
Unfortunately we cannot guarantee that you will have the 100% rooting that we want you to have, when dealing with living things there are too many variables beyond our control.
We will send out only quality cuttings that we feel you will succeed with and we try to give them at least a week in water before shipping to ensure they will do well for you.
Happy growing!
