Let's start with the packing.
We do our best to ensure that your plants will arrive in one piece. After working in the post office for several years and seeing the number of damaged plants that came through the system we want to avoid being one of the many plant companies that toss your plant in a box , tape it shut and wish it good luck on its journey to your home.
Your plants are watered the night before they are shipped so that we can be sure the leaves are dry for boxing. We remove all but a couple of leaves on each plant to reduce stress during shipping. All of our plants are shipped either in their pots or bare root depending on the root ball.
Each pot or root ball is wrapped in a plastic bag, secured with elastic bands and carefully taped into place in the shipping box. Once the order is taped in place we like to give it what I call a "shake test", the box is shaken vigorously and if anything moves it is repacked. Once all is secured the box is filled with either newspaper of recycled packing peanuts to ensure that if the plants do come loose they won't shift much in the box.
Unpacking your box
Open your box with the side with the packing slip facing up. Once opened turn the box upside down and shake gently allowing most of the packing material to fall free.
Using a sharp knife start gently cutting the tape that is holding the pots in place (this is where you'll begin cursing me!) Remove the elastics and the plastic bag surrounding your pot.
Your plant's leaves will vary in color green to yellow depending on the number of days in the box. If they are yellow and sickly looking don't panic they will green up quickly with proper care.
Care after unpacking.
Start off by giving them a good drink.
Do not put your plants into direct sunlight after unpacking or they may suffer severe sunburn. I like to acclimatize them over about a week. The first couple of days in a shady spot and gradually increasing the sun as they green up. Once they green up you can begin fertilizing with liquid feed such as 20 20 20. After a week to 10 days they will be ready to re-pot or plant into the garden if the weather is suitable.
